Need Hugs

Don't come too close today - I've got the lurgy. :o(

Started out as an annoying tickly cough last week and now it feels like I have the flu. Except it must only be a bad cold as I am out of bed and capable of typing.

The real bummer is I'm told that most of those nice combination "max-strength" liquids and effective chesty cough mixtures can't be taken my asthmatics. So if there are any pharmacists out there that have any recommendations, please let me know and if there are any pharmaceutical companies listening, please develop something for asthmatics! :o

Normal service will be resumed shortly ...

Hello!
Pharmacist out here! I'm affraid to tell you there is nothing for asthma appart from inhalation aerosols containing dilator active principles such as Salbutamol and others and some new drugs recently appeared, but they are just sympthomatic reliefs. You could take some medicines for your cough except those solutions containing codeine, as it could make some bronquial constriction increasing the difficult of breathing even more, but maybe you now that yet. If you have fever or feel a bit down (like if someone had beated you or something...) you could take paracetamol (650 mg/8 hours, but you can increase that doses in case of being necessary...)...as it doesn't have any problem with asthma. And remeber to drink many oranges or take 1g of C vitamine every morning to help your immune system to fight against the virus! Sleep would help you, too. That way your body won't spend energy in anything else appart from curing you!
well...I hope I helped you a bit!
Take much care !

Thank you! :o)

Yeah, I'm taking my inhalers to keep the airways open. I've never been told that I can't taken codeine. Hmmm ... it's so confusing.

I got my hubby to go to the shops for me and he brought me back lots of fresh oranges. He also bought me back some of my favourite chocolate - perhaps not a proven cold cure but it made me feel better! :o)

Rhea, I'm mildly asthmatic - although of course that gets much worse whenever I have a cold and/or cough; you have my sympathy. I'm not a pharmacist and you should double-check these recommendations to make sure they're suitable for you, but I get on well with (a) Covonia Bronchial Balsam for cough relief (they do a daytime and a night-time version and it doesn't taste TOO horrid) and (b) Day Nurse/Night Nurse capsules for cold relief. (I don't use both together; the capsules contain a cough suppressant but if it's only a cough I've got then the balsam is fine.) The capsules are based on paracetamol rather than aspirin or nurofen, which I think is what makes them OK for asthmatics. I'm not sure whether the Covonia stuff says it's OK for asthmatics or not, but I've always got on fine with it.

The other thing that's really good is a hot toddy. Zinnia's patent recipe: put three fat slices of fresh root ginger in a mug and pour boiling water over. Squeeze juice from half a lemon and add to mug, then add hefty slug of whisky/brandy/rum or equivalent, then enough honey to make it taste good. Drink while hot and repeat as necessary. Yum!

Hope you feel much better really soon. Take care.

Oh no! Poor you.

Have no idea regarding meds though sorry as I tend to take a herbal approach (wondering if Zinnia's cough linctus is herbal) but big hugs willingly provided!

Thanks for the comments girls.

I'm taking a cough mixture that has the same chemical in it as Covonia I think. It's helping to stop me coughing which is ok.
I can't take those Day Nurse/Night Nurse thingies - they really space me out for some reason. :o)

I tend not to worry too much about taking remedies for normal cold symptoms, it just has to take its course. I make a version of a hot toddy with cinnamon, orange, lemon and honey. Yum. However, the thing that I do watch closely though is my chest. I had a cold which developed into a chest infection two years ago and wow did that make me feel awful!
